Mission Statement:
Crystal Lake Conservancy, Inc. (“CLC”) was established for the purposes of preserving and protecting Crystal Lake for the benefit of the public by promoting and supporting the unique natural beauty and recreational enjoyment of the Lake.
The organization’s charitable activities can be divided into five areas:
Educational:
CLC intends to increase community awareness of issues related to the Lake by providing information on its web site and by printing flyers and informational brochures concerning the Lake. It will share knowledge and skills with other conservation organizations such as the Newton Conservators to develop a set of recommended best practices regarding the protection and preservation of the Lake. It will also promote environmentally sustainable uses for Crystal Lake and surrounding public lands among those who utilize the Lake for recreation and among regulators and decision makers. CLC also plans to issue newsletters with information about the Lake and its uses. CLC may distribute information about the impact of lawn maintenance practices, and how they may be improved to the benefit of the Lake. These types of educational activities will account for roughly 10% of CLC’s activities.
Environmental:
CLC intends to provide an environmental assessment of the Lake. This includes hiring experts to determine the effects of lawn care practices within the Lake’s watershed, the effects of storm water drainage into the lake, and the impact of activities associated with the use of the Lake. It will undertake to distribute the results of the assessment widely and to update this information periodically. CLC’s environmental assessment efforts will account for roughly 25 % of its activities.
Programs and Activities:
CLC will collaborate with the City of Newton and other community volunteer efforts focused on Crystal Lake. For example, it might co-sponsor a “clean up the Lake” day, or organize tours of the historic neighborhood. CLC may also organize activities for children, such as sand castle competitions. Such programs and activities will account for roughly 5% of CLC’s activities
Long Range Planning:
CLC will also focus on developing a long range plan for physical, natural and aesthetic improvements and maintenance of Crystal Lake as a natural city wide resource. Such improvements are likely to include engaging the City in the construction of a bath-house as well as restoration of historic fencing, planting new trees to restore historic landscapes, and revamping storm drains to reduce the effects of street runoff on the lake. Development and implementation of the long range plan will account for roughly 10% of CLC’s activities.
Fundraising:
CLC will also engage in fund raising activities for the purpose of assisting the City of Newton in funding the construction of a new Crystal Lake bath-house and related site landscaping, and to assist in maintaining and improving public facilities adjacent to the Lake, including the bath-house, beach, and the Coves.
The organization hopes to identify fund raising strategies and opportunities for participation at various levels of contribution to appeal to the broader community, and to explore opportunities for appropriate grant funding. Fundraising efforts are likely to account for roughly 50% of CLC’s activities.
